Want to know how AI systems see your brand? This DIY audit process takes about 30 minutes and gives you a baseline understanding of your current AI visibility across major platforms.
Follow these steps to assess where you stand.
What You'll Need
- Access to ChatGPT (free or Plus)
- Access to Perplexity (free)
- Google search
- A spreadsheet to record findings
- List of 10-15 queries relevant to your business
The 6-Step Audit Process
1 Prepare Your Query List (5 min)
Create 10-15 queries that potential customers might ask AI about your industry, products, or services. Include:
- Direct brand queries: "Tell me about [Your Brand]"
- Category queries: "Best [your category] companies"
- Problem queries: "How to solve [problem you solve]"
- Recommendation queries: "Recommend a [your product type]"
- Comparison queries: "[Your brand] vs [competitor]"
2 Test ChatGPT (8 min)
Run each query through ChatGPT. For each response, record:
- Were you mentioned? (Yes/No/Partially)
- Position in response (1st, 2nd, 3rd, not mentioned)
- Accuracy of information about your brand
- Sentiment (positive, neutral, negative)
- What competitors were mentioned instead?
3 Test Perplexity (8 min)
Run the same queries through Perplexity. Record:
- Were you cited as a source?
- Were you mentioned in the response text?
- Which of your pages were cited (if any)?
- What competitors were cited?
4 Check Google AI Overviews (5 min)
Search relevant queries on Google and look for AI Overviews. Note:
- Does an AI Overview appear for your target queries?
- Are you mentioned or cited in the overview?
- What sources are cited?
5 Check Entity Recognition (3 min)
Verify your entity status:
- Search for your brand on Wikipedia—do you have an article?
- Search Google for your brand—does a Knowledge Panel appear?
- Check Wikidata.org for your brand entry
6 Calculate Your Baseline Score (3 min)
Create a simple score based on your findings:
- ChatGPT mentions: __ out of __ queries
- Perplexity citations: __ out of __ queries
- AI Overview presence: __ out of __ queries
- Entity recognition: Wikipedia (Y/N), Knowledge Panel (Y/N)
Interpreting Your Results
Strong Position (70%+ visibility)
You're mentioned in most relevant queries. Focus on maintaining and expanding—monitor for changes, optimize underperforming queries, and prepare for competitors catching up.
Moderate Position (30-70% visibility)
You have foundation but significant gaps. Prioritize the highest-value queries where you're not appearing and work on strengthening authority signals.
Weak Position (<30% visibility)
Major optimization needed. Start with foundational elements—entity recognition, basic content optimization, and authority building before tackling specific queries.
